Abstract

This work aims to analyze the difficulties presented by the students of the 7th year of Elementary Education on Relative Whole Numbers. The study was conceived from a study carried out with 23 (twenty-three) students of a public school of the Municipal network in the city of Cumaru, state of Pernambuco. The research was based on the conceptions of some authors, such as Boyer and Eves focusing on the History of Mathematics, Starepavo talking about learning difficulties, Schubring addressing reading and interpretation of problems, among others. The methodology was developed based on the concepts of Moreira, Oliveira and Severino, based on a quantitative, qualitative approach in an exploratory descriptive way, investigating the additive and additive operation. The results pointed out that the students of the 7th year of Elementary School present difficulties, especially regarding reading and interpretation in situations proposed problems in a contextualized way, as well as in the methodological procedures in the act of mathematical operations
