Nowadays, public services are looking-for to become more sustainable, creating solutions to problems linked to industrialization and population growth. As part of the pursuit of this global wellbeing, the urban public transport service also joins this trend, seeking to become more sustainable through the reduction of negative externalities that it generates. One of the externalities with significant impact is traffic accidents, for this reason, in the present investigation a study of social and economic aspects related to traffic accidents in the city of Ambato is carried out. To achieve this objective, the social cost generated by this externality was calculated and analyzed using an economic model to estimate the cost and the contingent valuation method. Afterwards, the effect of these values on society was evaluated. Using a survey to collect information about what are the factors causing these accidents and the application of a correlational statistical model, the willingness to pay (WTP) by the users to mitigate the costs generated by traffic accidents in society was determined.
