ZERO WASTE LINEAR PATTERNING SYSTEM: SUSTAINABLE PATTERNS WITHOUT PRE-CONSUMPTION LOSSES

Abstract

The unsustainable fashion system generates tons of textile waste annually. These losses are thrown in the garbage, burned or buried so they generate a high degree of contamination to the environment. Consistent with this problem, this study proposes a linear patterning system based on zero waste for urban clothing. The transformation of the fashion system towards a sustainable system is taken as a theoretical approach, with the triad: transformation of the product, transformation of the process and transformation of the practice of design. The methodology used was the qualitative comparative analysis of textile efficiency between the conventional method of industrial pattern making; and unconventional ones such as: Kinetic Garment Construction, Subtraction Cutting and ZeroWaste. To this was added the methodological strategies of the research for the design, in the generation of an operational tool of pattern making that reoriented the processes towards a closed cycle of production, enhancing the efficiency and less waste of the textile waste. As a result, a zero residue linear pattern system was applied to five garments that minimize textile residues from 1 to 10%.
