EFFECTS OF NEOLIBERALISM ON LABOR AND UNIONS REALM: AN ANALYSIS IN MEXICO AND LATIN AMERICA
Abstract
This article examines some perspectives of neoliberalism, considering its impacts on both the labor
and union spheres, especially in Latin America and Mexico. Neoliberalism is disaggregated to analyze
its essential components in order to determine its effects in selected Latin American countries. A
critical assessment of neoliberalism is conducted, relying on specialized literature and the observation
of recent cases in the region. The role of the state is explored regarding the implementation of
neoliberal policies, as well as the reactions of various social movements. Neoliberalism has
considerably modified the relations between the state and labor unions, reducing their influence in
both labor and political spheres. Opposition to neoliberalism has been headed by new social
movements, stemming from rural areas and deprived poor urban sectors, whereas the role of labor
unions has been marginal in this regard.
