FROM BONANZA TO MISERY: IMPACT OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION IN CHILE 1929-1932
Abstract
This study carries out an analysis of the economic crisis of 1929 and the repercussions it had on Latin
America and Chile. In this sense, insert the research problem whose purpose was to understand the
effects of the Great Economic Depression and its impact in Chile between 1929 and 1932. The
content analysis allowed to extract information from the texts, helping to interpret the data to answer
the research objective. It is concluded that the economy had serious social implications expressed in
protest against the government of Carlos Ibáñez, which in turn led to a serious political crisis. The
measures to solve the crisis were not enough. The external debt increased, it was determined to
abandon the gold standard and it stopped paying its payments abroad. All productive areas were
affected: mining and saltpeter, agriculture, construction, industry.
