THE IRRESISTIBLE FORCE OF SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS: A THEORY ORIENTED TO CHANGE?
Abstract
One of the main debates around the theory of social representations is associated with its critical
potential, on which there are divided positions. The present reflection understands this potential as
the possible transforming vocation of the theory and reviews its conceptual bases to analyze the
reasons why it may or may not be assumed that it is oriented towards social change. Such an exercise
allows us to assess that, from the formulations of Serge Moscovici, a reading of both the individual
and stable dimension of social representation as well as the social and dynamic dimension is
possible, according to the position of the researchers and their understanding of the mandate of
science in the society. Taking into account its characteristics and evolution, it is concluded that the
theory could and should, indeed, be used from the perspective of social change.
