LAW AND POLICY ITALIAN AND URUGUAYAN EMIGRATION IN THE NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH
Abstract
This essay deals with the topic of migration policies implemented by Italian governments from the Italian
Unification (1861) to the Fascist Italy, as well as with those immigration policies approved by the government
authorities of Uruguay from the end of the 19th century to the 1930s. Moreover, a comparative study is made
herein concerning Italian and Uruguayan immigration laws. In particular, this paper describes and comments on
the most important organic law on migration in Italy, passed in 1901, and it explores the first organic law on
migration in Uruguay, which came into force in 1890.
