Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present a critical reflection on the Economics teaching in Brazil,
focusing on the evolution of the methodological principles adopted since the foundation of the first
Courses in the area, until the introduction of debates on sustainability, recently reinvigorated by the
agenda of the Green New Deal. Throughout its history, the teaching of Economics in the country has
been characterized by the predominance of the mainstream perspective with liberal and neoclassical
inspirations, including the option for a growing “mathematization” of the contents. Reflecting on the
prominence of the conservative character in the teaching of Economics in Brazil, the article suggests
as a result that the use of the issues raised by the proposal for a new sustainable pact can be a
structuring axis of the curricula, with the capacity to expand the students' skills and, at the same time,
creating some conditions for a critical interaction between teachers and students with society
