AN ASSESSMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS' ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE ATTENDING UNIVERSITY OF GUADALAJARA, MEXICO

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study focused on examining the scores achieved by a sample of
around fourteen hundred students in the exam required to enter the university, and how such grades
correlated to the kind of high school previously attended by the subjects. The survey was carried out
at a Mexican university, located in an underprivileged region, with culturally diverse population, which
includes indigenous groups. Among the most important findings, it was found that those youngsters
coming from a technologically oriented high school performed better that the rest, also the best grades
were achieved by students coming from institutions located outside Jalisco. By far the most significant
benefit provided by this analysis was getting a set of concrete measurements that most likely help
faculty and administration to improve teaching strategies by adapting them to the particular
circumstances of the students.
