IMMIGRANTS IN PORTUGAL – CAN I CONTRIBUTE BUT CANNOT RESIDE?
Abstract
The phenomenon of immigration has existed since the dawn of humanity, in which man moves from
his home country to another in the hope of finding better living conditions. In Portugal is no different,
this country had an increase in immigration of 13,9% in the year 2018, compared to 2017, totaling a
foreign, population of 480.300 people, with Brazilians predominating among others, due to the identity
of language and climate. However, these citizens face a rigorous bureaucracy, lack of qualified
personnel, which leads to lengthy residence permit procedures and may wait for more than a year,
causing huge damage to foreign citizens. However, this same state that is slow to approve the
application for residence permit of these immigrants, allows without any bureaucracy that they open
activities, acquire documents from the State Finances and Social Security, thus making them
contributors to the public coffers.
