Video game consoles connectivity and digital distribution have increased the ways to make a product profitable, thus extending its commercial life. In addition, online multiplayer games serve as an example of a model based on providing game services rather than single-player games. DLCs and microtransactions are predominant business models nowadays, highlighting loot boxes both for their prevalence and their controversy. The gambling-like nature of loot boxes is targeted by legislators, administrations and public opinion. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the current landscape of the video game industry and legislative measures developed with respect to microtransactions and loot boxes.
