THE ENCOUNTER WITH THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE OTHER: COMPASSION IN THE NARRATIVE OF PROFESSIONALS WHO CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH MULTIPLE DISABILITIES

This research aimed to recognize in compassion, unfolded in reception and care,
as well as the strengths, barriers, and weaknesses that health professionals face,
learn, overcome and diversify to support the daily challenges of a vulnerable
public. The descriptive and qualitative research was carried out through a focus
group, at the Pequeno Cotolengo Health Complex, a reference philanthropic
institution in the reception of people with multiple disabilities in the city of Curitiba,
Paraná, southern Brazil. The results showed that in the speech of the
professionals, expressions of values predominated when compared to
weaknesses, beliefs, and potential. The limitations addressed raise ethical
dilemmas in assisting people with disabilities, however compassion is present in
daily activities. It is hoped to foster debates on care based on bioethical principles
and human rights in health care.
